Oklahoma City Blazers Hockey

Weekend Preview: Blazers vs. Wichita 10/14 – 10/16

The wait is finally over, the Oklahoma City Blazers will begin their third season in the Western States Hockey League this weekend as they take on the Wichita Jr. Thunder. The Blazers have many new faces on the team this season, including some returning players to help guide the team. The scouting by head coach Tyler Fleck and the rest of the coaching staff was phenomenal, as the team has brought in many high-profile players this season.

The Jr. Thunder have already started their season, and have a two-week head start on Oklahoma City. Wichita has jumped out to an early lead in the Midwest Division, sitting with 9 points in six games played. Wichita currently sits with a 4-1-1 record. Last weekend, the Jr. Thunder split their weekend series with the Tulsa Jr. Oilers, winning twice and dropping a game in Overtime.

Wichita is led in scoring by returning forward Oskar Gullstrom. Gullstrom has 14 points in six games, with three of those coming from a hat trick this last Sunday against Tulsa. Right behind Gullstrom is another returning forward for the Jr. Thunder. Peter Cicmanec has 12 points on the season, including a four-point night during their opening weekend against the Springfield Express.

In net, Wichita is led by Erik Spath, with a 3-0-1 record so far. Spath has played to a .951 saves percentage and 2.17 goals against average in four games.

The Blazers will look to continue their high-scoring ways this season, bringing back three of their top-four forwards from 2015-16 in Ivan Bondarenko, Kirill Romanov, and Tomas Rubes. Back on defense, the Blazers have brought back Jared Guffey and Drake Johnson to help lead the defensive corps.

With a new look in net, the Blazers will turn to Drennen Atherton, Phil Babb, and Oklahoma City-born Brock Thompson to keep the pucks out of the net.
