The Oklahoma City Blazers announced today they have resigned defenseman Drake Johnson for the upcoming season. Johnson becomes the 2nd player announced for the 15-16 Western States Hockey League Season.

In his rookie season with the Blazers, the 6’2” 220 pound defenseman scored 5 goals and added 10 assists in 43 regular season games. Johnson, a native of Newcastle Ok., also added 4 assists in 5 playoff games.

“Drake Johnson is a guy we can see playing in our top 4 on a nightly basis. He was arguably one of our most improved players last year and proved he belongs at this level or even higher,” said head coach Tyler Fleck. “He has all the tools and has great hockey IQ. I am very excited to see what Drake brings in his second year.”

“I am beyond excited to be back with the Blazers this year. I believe we are going to have a great team and have a great chance to bring home a championship to Oklahoma City,” Johnson said.
Drake Johnson improved from the beginning of the season to the end and he is working hard in the offseason to do what he has to do to be an impact player in a league that is improving on the junior hockey landscape.

“I know Drake is working as hard as anyone right now in preparation for the new season. I watched him at the CCM showcase in Denver a few weeks ago and he’s faster and stronger. I thought overall he was one of the top Dmen there. He made the all star game,” Fleck explained

“I want to improve my overall play, get bigger, faster and stronger to be more of a force on the ice,” the defenseman added
Johnson and the Blazers are looking forward to the challenge of the higher level.

“The league making the jump will make the game faster and bring in more high level guys. It will be great for our fans to see higher level of play and speed to the game they haven’t seen before. This year as a team, I believe we can build off what we did last year and can win it all with hard work.”
Drake Johnson joins fellow Oklahoma native Kole Hudson as the first two signing announced for the upcoming season.

The Blazers kick off their second year as members of the WSHL in October.
Stay tuned for other big announcements and more player signings coming next week.
