Nelson Remains in OKC

The Oklahoma City Blazers announced today that defenseman Colton Nelson has signed for the upcoming season. Nelson, 20, returns for his final year of junior hockey in OKC after posting 8 goals and 20 assists in 42 regular season games last year for the B’s. Nelson also racked up 138 penalty minutes, good for second on the team in that category, and chipped in a pair of assists in 6 playoff games.
The 6’2” 190 pound Nelson began the season on the wing but was converted to defense halfway through the season where he excelled.
“Nelly, really came into his own when we moved him back to the point. He has puck confidence that comes with being a forward and moves very well. Colton’s strong skating ability allows him to skate the puck out of trouble and engage in the rush offensively. He’s a very valuable player because he can also jump up on forward for us too,” said head coach Tyler Fleck.
“The adjustment wasn’t too hard until (we played) El Paso, they were challenging. I’m excited to have a full year at defense this year. A good personal goal for me is just to improve my play where I can be one of the best defensemen in the league,” Nelson stated.
Nelson, is in a good spot if ever needs any help or advice improving at his new position. He’s the son of former Edmonton Oilers head coach, Todd Nelson, now the head coach of the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
“Well, he’s the one that got me into hockey in the first place, so I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. He’s also told me some things that have personally helped me more than any other coach in my career,” said Nelson.
While Todd Nelson and the family will be making the move full time to Grand Rapids, son Colton has chosen to remain in Oklahoma for one last shot at title.
“I want to thank coach Fleck and his staff, our sponsors and potential ones, and most of all, our fans. (They) treated us like pros and I look forward to getting back at it with the team. We wouldn’t be here without you guys and we appreciate everything. The team goal for this year is simple, we want our rings!”
