The Oklahoma City Blazers announced today that they have named the captains for the upcoming WSHL season. Hard hitting defenseman Michal Beranek was named the second captain in franchise history today and will dawn the captains “C” when the Blazers head to Wichita for three games this weekend.

“Michal leads by example. I’ve watched him for almost six weeks and he is the unquestioned leader of this hockey club. No one can dispute that,” said head coach Tyler Fleck. “He holds guys accountable and commands the respect of his peers. He’s a guy that won’t tell you how it’s done, he will just show you.  He’s extremely driven and a fierce competitor. A true leader.”

The Blazers also named Colton Nelson, Lubos Vacek and Kole Hudson alternate Captains. Kirill Romanov, Jiri Hajda and Tomas Nemeth will alternate as well.

“We have an older group and there are many guys very capable, so we will give several players the opportunity. But at the end of the day, everyone in that locker room is a leader and they understand that. It’s not about one or two or three people, it’s about the entire team pulling in the same direction, picking each other up and supporting each other,” Fleck stated.

Oklahoma City also announced that goaltender Ole Nilsen will get the nod between the pipes for the Blazers season opening tilt in Wichita on Friday.

“Our goaltending battle continues, we will likely see all of our goalies this weekend. We brought Nilsen, Kostka and Lajoie in a couple weeks ago and told them to battle it out, to compete, and they have all done a great job. Ole will go in game one and we will see after that who we go to. I am confident in all three of these guys”

After the 3 games this weekend in Wichita, the Blazers will have almost 2 weeks to gear up for their home opener against the Springfield Express on Friday the 16th of October.
