Blazers Upset By Express

Blazers 5 upset by Spring 6

The Oklahoma City Blazers were defeated yesterday by the Springfield Express 6-5. Springfield was able to hang on to a 2 gaol lead in the third after the Blazers were able to battle back on two separate occasions facing a 1 and 2 goal deficit.

“We made very poor decisions in the neutral zone and at the offensive blue line. All of their goals were a result of us stepping up at the wrong time or turning the puck over. All 6 goals for them came off the rush,” said head coach Tyler Fleck.

The Blazers power play gave up a pair of shorthanded goals just seconds apart at the end of the first which left OKC trailing 4-2 after just 1 period. Oklahoma City was able to tie up the contest but once again let Springfield regain the lead on a poor neutral zone pinch sending the Express in on a 2 on 1 situation.  The Express would score and make 5-4 after 2.

Springfield would make it 6-4 early in third scoring on their 4th breakaway of the game. Kole Hudson would bring the Blazers within one on the power play late in the third but that was all the B’s keep muster before the final buzzer. Hudson would end the night with 1 goal and 3 assists. Eric Lietz, Matthew Audette, Victor Ekk and Hunter Smith also had goals in the loss.

Goaltender Jakub Krejci would take the loss in net for OKC stopping 32 of 38 shots. The Blazers outshot Springfield 40-38.

“We played with fire tonight and got burned, simple as that. Some guys were good for us and some guys were not. We need everybody to play how they can or we are toast.”

The Blazers were without top forwards Matt Levene and Dominik Vlk as well as defenceman Jared Guffey, all who have been sidelined with injuries.

The Blazers are currently in second place in the Midwest division behind conference leading El Paso. OKC is in 3rd place overall in the Eastern Conference trailing the Rhinos and Casper Coyotes.  Oklahoma City is 2 points behind Casper with 1 game in hand on the Mountain Division leaders.

The Blazers and Express play game 2 of the 3 game set in Springfield tonight at 7PM. Oklahoma City’s rookie goaltender Braden Lajoie will get the start tonight in net for the B’s.
