Blazers Sign Pair Of Young Defensemen

The Oklahoma City Blazers Junior Hockey Club announced today that they have signed defensemen Jared Guffey and Drake Johnson.

“Jared Guffey is very versatile. We noticed that at our open camp in May. He’s a smooth skater and likes to join the rush adding another dimension to the attack,” stated head coach and GM Tyler Fleck. “ He has the ability to play solid defense and contribute offensively because he such a strong skater. He can play a little forward as well which makes him very valuable.”
Guffey, who is 6’1 and 180 lbs, played last year for the Texas AAA Tornado is looking forward to the pace of the Junior game.
“I think the speed will be a bit faster than AAA and I’ll also be playing against older players that have been in jr before. I like playing in the faster paced games. It will be an awesome and new experience that should be exciting and full of development.”

“Drake Johnson is a big kid with an even bigger shot. He shoots the puck like pro already and has great hands as well. I am looking forward to working with Drake this year and helping him put it all together. He has a tremendous upside, he’s  big, skates well and has a cannon, “ said Fleck. “ We will work with him on the defensive side of the puck and give him some freedom offensively. He has the ability to be next level Dman very quickly.”
Johnson was a standout defenseman last year in the Dallas Stars Travel League as member of the OKC Oil Kings. The 6 foot 225 pound rookie is working hard to prepare for the upcoming season.
“I’m in the gym 4-5 times a week with other hockey players and on the ice whenever I can be,” Johnson said.
He also knows this is the beginning of a new challenge that he is ready to take on,”It will be an adjustment. Bigger, faster, stronger opponents. I will need to raise my complete level of play to prove I belong in this league. This season will be all about learning and making adjustments.”

Fleck finished by saying,“Both these players have a ton of potential. That is what we are looking for. I know these two are capable of playing at the next level and I look forward to helping them get there.

The Blazers begin their inaugural season as members of the WSHL this fall and
