Blazers Open Series Against Wichita; Teddy Bear Toss and More!

Friday night at 7:30p, the Oklahoma City Blazers open up their weekend series against the Wichita Thunder at the Blazers Ice Centre. That night, the Blazers Teddy Bear Toss will take place with everyone in attendance invited to bring bears to toss on the ice after the first Blazers goal is scored. All of the bears collected will be donated to the The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital in Bethany, Oklahoma. Friday will also feature the “Barrow of Booze” giveaway, and will feature the first night of the Blazers wearing their specialty Midwest Division Champions jersey.

The Blazers head into the weekend sitting in third place in the Midwest Division after the Springfield Express jumped over Oklahoma City while the Blazers were off this past weekend. Wichita sits right behind the Blazers in the standings, as five points separate the two teams with the Thunder in fourth place.

With a 15-1-0 record, the Blazers hold first place in the Midwest Division in terms of Points Percentage. The Blazers have a .938 Points%, ahead of the El Paso Rhinos with a .896 Points%. Oklahoma City is one of four teams in the WSHL to be above the .900 mark in the overall standings. Wichita holds an 11-7-3 record on the season.

The last meeting between Oklahoma City and Wichita was the Blazers season-opening weekend in Wichita, a series that Oklahoma City swept. That weekend featured the only time this season that the Blazers have been pushed to overtime so far.

Wichita is led in scoring by Peter Cicmanec who has 37 points in 18 games played. Oscar Gullstrom is second in scoring for the Thunder, earning 35 points in 19 games played. In net, Wichita has had two goaltenders splitting mostly-equal time with Adam Conkling and Erik Spath holding the majority of playing time.

Tomas Rubes leads the Blazers in scoring with 27 points in 16 games played. Russians Viktor Ekk and Kirill Romanov are currently second and third in scoring with 24 and 23 points, respectively. OKC’s three goaltenders – Drennen Atherton, Brock Thompson, and Phil Babb – all sit in the top-5 of the Midwest Division in Goals Against Average.
