Blazers Defeat Jr. Thunder in Season Opener

Friday night, the Oklahoma City Blazers defeated the Wichita Jr. Thunder in the Blazers season opener in a 4-0 shutout. Blazers goaltender Drennen Atherton made 38 saves in the win, to pick up his first shutout of the season.

Both teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 26 minutes of play, but a shorthanded goal by Tomas Rubes opened up the scoring early in the second period, with an assist by captain Zach Paxman. Wichita goaltender Erik Spath held off the Blazers through the remainder of the second period, keeping it a 1-0 score after 40 minutes.

Early in the third period, the Blazers extended the lead to 2-0 as Ivan Bondarenko found Spath out of position and the net wide open. Just a few minutes later, the Blazers found themselves on an extended power play as a result of a double minor penalty to Wichita. Victor Ekk and Cory King both found the back of the net with the man advantage.

Atherton turned aside all 13 shots by the Jr. Thunder in the third to secure the shutout and the 4-0 Blazers win.
