Blazers Make Blockbuster Move

The Oklahoma City Blazers announce today that they have acquired blue chip defenseman, Wichita Thunder Captain, Alex Smith. The Blazers continue to be extremely aggressive with their roster in preparation for this weekend’s games versus the the defending national champion El Paso Rhino’s. The veteran Smith is currently tied for 2nd in the WSHL in points scored for defenseman with 7 goals and 14 assists in just 18 games. The former Thunder captain has done most of his damage on the power play with 13 of the 21 points coming with the man advantage.

“This is an enormous move. Alex Smith is a top D-man on any team in this league. I honestly believe this guy should be playing at the next level. He’s big, moves well, has a nasty edge to him and also possesses an absolute bomb from the point, “ said head coach and general manager Tyler Fleck. “Alex is only 18 years old and this is his 3rd year in the league. He was the unquestioned leader of Wichita’s team and will come here and assume a leadership role as well.”

The 6’1” 185 pound defender has several ties to OKC and the Blazers specifically. Smith will come on board along side step brother Braden Lajoie, the Blazers goaltender. Smith also played 2 years of pee wee hockey in OKC before moving to Kansas City, then Wichita. “ Alex will be here today for practice but our first order of business with him is to call our contacts in higher leagues and let them know he is here and available. It is still our job to move these guys on to the next level and we intend to do that even if it means losing them. Until then we are looking forward to having him here in a Blazer uniform.”

Smith will make his Blazer debut wearing #52 in El Paso Friday night and Coach Fleck has also already named him one of the Alternate Captains of the hockey club. The Blazers leave for El Paso tomorrow night for a showdown with the reining national champion Rhinos. Games time Friday is 7:30PM, Saturday 7:30PM and Sunday 4:30PM. All game times are in Mountain Standard Time.
