OKC Adds Defenseman Cody Wardner

The Oklahoma City Jr. Blazers and Head Coach Gary Gill announced today that they have signed defenseman Cody Wardner for the 2017-18 Western States Hockey League season. Wardner joins Oklahoma City after spending the 2016-17 season split between the Winnipeg Blues (MJHL) and Dryden Ice Dogs (SIJHL). In 34 total games last season, Wardner scored three goals and added 11 assists.

At 6’5″ and 220 pounds, Wardner’s size plays a big part of his game, “I would describe my playing style as a big, physical defenseman,” stated Wardner. “I see the ice well, and can jump in the rush and provide some offense as well.” In addition to his size, Wardner looks to round out his game this season by focusing on his foot-speed, “I would love to improve my foot-speed and maintaining a better gap to take the rush back, making it more difficult for the opposing forwards coming toward our blue line.

A native of Crookston, Minnesota, Wardner spent four seasons at Crookston High School before heading to Canada last season, an experience that Wardner hopes to put into practice this season. “Canada was a lot different from high school. It was more physical and a lot faster in Canada, and teams up in Canada were a lot better at capitalizing on your mistakes. You had to be a lot safer with the puck, so it was a big eye-opening experience for me.”

As Wardner heads south, he stated that it was the words of another Blazer that influenced his decision to join OKC, “I chose to come to Oklahoma because I’ve heard nothing but good things about the program. A good buddy of mine that I played with in Winnipeg for a short while, Connor Dunn, had a lot of positive things to say about OKC. It seems like a great opportunity to have a very successful season and hopefully win a championship.”
