Drake Johnson Re-Signs with Blazers

The Oklahoma City Blazers and Head Coach Gary Gill announced today that they have re-signed defenseman Drake Johnson for the 2017-18 Western States Hockey League season. From Norman, Oklahoma, Johnson joins fellow defenseman Kaleb Foreman as one of the original players from Oklahoma City’s inaugural WSHL season in 2014-15. Johnson becomes the fifth player signed by the Blazers for the upcoming WSHL season.

With the change behind the bench for OKC this season, Johnson stated that the change is one he’s excited to be apart of. “Coach Gill is a great guy and an even better coach. Him being with the Blazers will only make this team better and I am looking forward to it.”

“With different systems and the way things are run with the team, it’ll be a new challenge, but I think the team is ready for it.”

The 6’1″, 220-pound defenseman will enter this season as the Blazers all-time leader in games played with 141. Through three seasons with the Blazers, Johnson has scored 18 goals and 51 assists, tallying 119 penalty minutes as well.

Heading into the season, Johnson also noted the importance he’d like to place on the off-ice activities this season, “Team chemistry and coming together as one. Being close off the ice is a huge part of being successful on the ice.”

2017-18 will mark Johnson’s final year of WSHL eligibility, and he looks to make the most of his final season with the Blazers; “To win a championship for OKC and our great fans. It’s just all about making the most of my last year and having as much fun as I can.”
