Blazers Re-Sign Griffin Wiencek

The Oklahoma City Blazers and Head Coach Gary Gill announced today that they have re-signed forward Griffin Wiencek for the 2017-18 Western States Hockey League season. Wiencek was first acquired by the Blazers in February of 2017, after stints with the Nipawin Hawks (SJHL) and Vermont Jr. Lumberjacks (EHL) during the 2016-17 season. Hailing from Sherwood, Oregon, Wiencek was a member of the NPHL championship-winning Wenatchee Wolves in 2015-16.

Wiencek skated in 13 games with the Blazers last season, picking up five goals and four assists. During OKC’s playoff run, Wiencek added another assist in two games played.

Despite a short run to finish out the season, Oklahoma City made a big impression on the 1997-born forward. “The atmosphere surrounding the Blazers, and the enthusiasm of our fans, really helped [in making my decision to return],” said Wiencek, also noting the addition of Coach Gill and the signing of a familiar face in one of the Blazers newest players, Josh Chamberlain, as factors in his decision.

With the change in coaches this season, Wiencek continued, “I’m most looking forward to Coach Gill’s approach to the game. It seems like he runs a very no-nonsense program and a program that’s going to produce wins, so I’m excited to see where he can take us.”

Standing 6′ 2″, and weighing in at 185 pounds, Wiencek is looking to put his stamp on the offense this season. “Individually, I’m hoping to improve my scoring ability and my hockey sense in the offensive zone this season. I think I’ve always built my game from the D-zone out and I’m looking forward to chipping in on offense this year.”
